Gasoline and Fuel Economy: Auto Industry at a Crossroads
Gasoline and Fuel Economy: Auto Industry at a Crossroads - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2008-06-26 - On June 26th, The Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming discussed the future role of the auto industry and our federal government in fighting gas prices and examine the fuel economy standards proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in response to the enactment of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007. NHTSA's proposal calls for the fleet of cars and light trucks to average 31.6 miles per gallon by model year 2015 - but when calculating these standards, NHTSA used Energy Information Administration (EIA) assumptions about gas prices that defy reality, ranging from .42/gallon in 2016 to .51/gallon in 2030. The administration concedes that gas prices are the most critical element in determining mile per gallon increases in America's vehicle fleet. At a hearing before the Select Committee earlier this month, the EIA said NHTSA should use the high end analysis for gas prices, which would have the effect of significantly raising the achievable miles per gallon in future vehicles. WITNESS LIST: The Honorable Tyler Duvall, Assistant Secretary for Policy, Department of Transportation; Mr. Dominique Thormann, Senior Vice President, Nissan North America, Inc.; Mr. Shai Agassi, Founder and CEO, Project Better Place; Mr. Torben Holm, Consultant, DONG Energy A/S; Mr. Jeffrey R. Holmstead ...

Massachusetts v EPA and Aviation's Impact on Global Warming
Massachusetts v EPA and Aviation's Impact on Global Warming - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2008-04-02 - On Wednesday, April 2, 2008, Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming is holding a hearing titled, "From the Wright Brothers to the Right Solutions: Curbing Soaring Aviation Emissions." The hearing will take place on April 2, 2008 at 1:30 pm in Room 1310 of the Longworth House Office Building. Witnesses will be by invitation only. As Congress examines all causes and impacts of heat-trapping emissions, the Select Committee is assessing aviation's present contribution to greenhouse gasses and the potential to curb such emissions in the future. Aviation emissions generate 12 percent of US transportation carbon dioxide emissions and three percent of the United States' total carbon dioxide emissions. The FAA estimates that demand for passenger and cargo aviation in the United States will double or triple by 2025. As the European Union is poised to extend its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to all airlines, it is imperative for Congress to consider how aviation can contribute to or curb heat-trapping emissions through operations, technology and fuel. Witnesses: * Dan Elwell, FAA Assistant Administrator for Aviation Policy, Planning, and Environment; * Bob Meyers, Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation, US Environmental Protection Agency * Tom ...

Healthy Planet, Health People: Global Warming and Public Health
Healthy Planet, Health People: Global Warming and Public Health - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2008-04-09 - On Wednesday, April 9, Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming addressed the warming planet, and how climate change affects the health of her citizens. During a week where major public health bodies are calling attention to the links between an unhealthy planet and an unhealthy people, the hearing's panel of scientists, practicing doctors, and public health professionals will describe the various ways climate change poses a serious public health threat. WITNESSES: Howard Frumkin, MD, MPH, Ph.D., Center for Disease Control, Director of National Center for Environmental Health, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry; Jonathan Patz, MD, MPH, Professor and Director of Global Environmental Health, University of Wisconsin at Madison; Georges Benjamin, MD, FACP, FACEP (Emeritus), Executive Director, American Public Health Association; Mark Jacobson, Ph.D., Director, Atmosphere and Energy Program and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University; Dana Best, MD, MPH, FAAP, American Academy of Pediatrics. Regional Earth System Prediction: Microbes to Man
Google Tech Talk September 18, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Professor Raghu Murtugudde, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center University of Maryland, College Park. While the IPCC will continue to lead Earth System projections for global issues such as greenhouse gas levels and global temperature increase, high-resolution regional Earth System predictions will be crucial for producing effective decision-making tools for day- to-day, sustainable Earth System management and adaptive management of resources. Regional Earth System predictions and projections at the order of a few meters resolution from days to decades must be validated and provide uncertainties and skill scores to be usable. While the task is daunting, it would be criminally negligent of the global human not to embark on this task immediately. The observational needs for the integrated natural-human system for the regional Earth System are distinct from the global needs even though there are many overlaps. Regional Earth System monitoring and predictions thus will continuously take the pulse of the planet to prescribe appropriate actions for participatory decision-making for sustainable and adaptive management of the Earth System and to avoid catastrophic domains of potential outcomes. The model predictions must produce predictive, pre-emptive, personalized environmental information for human health, agro-economics, fisheries, water, energy, harmful algal ...
